Well, it's 2012. And among my resolutions is to be more active on my blog. I will come up with a fantabulous idea then get busy with my kids and forget to do anything about my idea. I'm going to do better.

Here are some big changes coming up for Lambourne Photography this year

1 - I am shifting the focus of my business. I have focused on weddings and family photography while skirting around kids and newborns even though - ironically, I'm sure - my passion is newborns and kids. Especially newborns. 2011 brought me the opportunity to work as an independent contractor with a company which does newborn photography inside hospitals. Through them I was able to photograph over 200 newborns and I. LOVE. IT. Outside of my own children nothing brings me more joy than holding a brand new itty bitty baby and capturing their beauty for their parents. Love it. Even on bad mornings my mood could be instantly uplifted once I got to hold and photograph a cute little newborn, many times less than a day old. I finally woke up to the fact that THIS is what I want to do in my own studio. Will I still do weddings and other photography? I'm sure I will, but my focus will be newborns and babies under age 1. And I am EXCITED!

2 - I am working on a little business venture that will open up my studio for Mom-ographers and private use. Keep watch for further information on "My Studio by Lambourne Photography".

3 - I have a family. They come first. Regrettably I have spent a lot of time on bad marketing and dead end ideas; time which should have been spent with my 5 children. I'm fixing that this year. And I have faith that by rearranging my priorities I will still somehow make my business thrive...even with the new direction in which I am taking it.

Watch out 2012. Here I come.

They came back this week...with their new baby. Loved it!!! Returning clients make me smile, especially when they come toting a newborn. I don't know what it is about newborns that can make everybody smile. It's a little living miracle. Awesome.

Why do I do what I do

It's been a long time since I even came over to the blog. I've spent some time re-evaluating myself and my work. And I asked myself the question "Why do I do what I do?" I've spent 4 years struggling to keep a business afloat in a saturated market. So why keep doing it? Because I love it. Because it is a part of me. Whether I am turning a profit or barely breathing it is worth it to me because this is one of my passions. If I could spend my days capturing beautiful images and spending time with my kids and husband I would be the happiest woman on earth. So that's why. That is why I keep plugging away at this even though I have been told that maybe I should turn my attention elsewhere. Where would I turn? What else brings me as much joy? Even if I am having a horrendous day I can pick up my camera and I feel energized. Of course I would love to have enough profit to buy the newest props and a better camera body and newer lenses, but that's not why I do it. This isn't a job. This is life, and me doing my best to capture your life.

Life moves so fast. Our kids and families change so much. Pictures, professionally done or not, freeze moments in time and give us something tangible to help us remember that time in our lives. And in this day when everything can be kept in digital form and even stored outside our homes means we can keep it even if we lose the originals. Isn't that awesome!?

Why is it so important? Sometimes pictures really are all you have left. And through them people can remain in our lives long after they are gone. I always loved photography; it has been a hobby since I first "borrowed" my dad's film SLR when I was 7. I always loved looking back at pictures and hearing stories about what happened that day. The first day I rode a bike, my first day of Kindergarten, the day my parents got married. Pictures open a discussion and evoke emotions. I loved it. But the importance of them didn't hit me fully until I was 25. My husband and I have 6 beautiful daughters. It's a yours-mine-and-ours family. My two oldest are not his. Their father passed away when they were 2 and 1. I was a widow at 25 years old. They don't get to see their dad in person. But they get to know him through stories and photographs. I can tell them what a wonderful man he was, how fun he was, and how much he loved them. But through photographs they get to see it for themselves. No story can replace an image of him holding his newborn daughters or pushing them on the swings. Those girls are 8 and 10 now and they don't remember him, but they do know him, and they daily see reminders of how much he loved them. This is why I do what I do. To give memories a face.

I have been slacking on this blog for a while. I could blame pregnancy or a new baby, but in truth I have just completely spaced about sneak peeks with every session (although I could probably still blame that spaciness on pregnancy and a new baby....). But yesterday I was reminded to post a sneak peek of this session, so here you go :)

It was fun. Hectic, but fun. And I know first hand how hard it is to get 4 kids looking at the camera AND smiling at the same time. In fact, we've pretty much given up on it in our own family. These cute cousins were too busy having fun looking at each other and playing to play it up to the camera. But they're still adorable and I love the personalities that come out in the pictures.

I haven't posted in a while. Life got busy and I let my blog go by the wayside, but I didn't want to miss posting a sneak peek of this session. The precious baby boy was exactly one week old when I went to his house to photograph him. He was SO sweet. He started to fuss only one time and stopped instantly when I picked him up. And he is adorable to boot. I had so many great shots of him that I had a hard time choosing which 4 to put on this blog post, but in the end I think these work well together.

This couple of fun to work with. The husband is military and was only home for the weekend so we only had a small window to do portraits. I'm glad we were able to work it out. I had to laugh though because he was so military. I grew up as a military brat and my Dad was always serious. He wasn't a smiler in pictures. Neither was Ryan. But that's OK. His wife was sparkly and smiley enough for both of them :) And they were a really cute couple. Married for six years and you would have thought these were engagement photos. LOVED it!

Fun Fall portraits

I really enjoy working with this family. The kids are so cute, and the parents are really easy going. I'm always happy to hear from them!

We went up American Fork canyon for this shoot and found a nice little spot right off the road by the river. We weren't the only ones there but the other photog and his client (which, I can only assume was for a modeling portofolio because she was wearing a bikini and coat.....) left pretty soon after we arrived and we had the whole spot to ourselves.

I really like these pictures; hope you're happy with them too!

I have had the privilege of photographing this cutie a few times now and it's always so fun. Today she was a little hesitant, but that comes with being 9 months old :) Once she warmed up to me she was crawling all over and giving me the cutest smiles. Loved it!

This cute little girl came in for pictures with her newborn baby sister. She was such a ball of energy! She played dress up with my props and had a BLAST throwing around the feather boas. And I just got to sit there and click away at her cuteness. It was great :) Baby sister wouldn't go to sleep and was a tad fussy but she's only 3 weeks old. Newborns almost never do what you expect, but they are always a joy to photograph :)

Today's newborn was especially fun because I know I get to "watch" her grow up over the next year. Her mom won my first year package giveaway. So here's to the first of many fun sessions!

Today I had the privilege of photographing adoptive parents, birth parents and their baby. It was such a beautiful experience; even I had to fight back tears at some points and I was only on the outside looking in. The adoptive Mom is an old friend of mine...maybe that's why my emotions were close to the surface too. I have so much respect and awe for Mothers and Fathers who make the choice to give their child to another set of parents. I don't think I would have been strong enough if I had ever been faced with that decision. I've always said it's about love (I know I'm not the only one to say that) but seeing it today drove it home even more for me. It truly is love. Love for the child.

That's what inspired me to make the first image here. The birth mom wanted a picture like this and I fell in love with the idea. And the image came out even better than I thought it would. The way the baby is holding one Mom's hands and looking into the other's eyes. It is stunning. I hope they all cherish this and all the pictures from their session.

This little beauty turned 8 recently and will be baptized in a few weeks. Mom brought her in today for pictures of her baptism dress. I loved being able to capture this for them. She was so cute and happy and easy to work with. Thanks for bring her in!

I had the joy of photographing this precious baby when she was just a couple of months old. Now she's almost 6 months (wow, that was fast!) and Mom brought her back for some pictures with her big brother. It was a lot of fun for us :) And I loved seeing the two of them interact. It's so obvious they adore each other.

And all the rest of those Lambournes :) And yes, every single person in this picture is a Lambourne (except for my two cutie Van Reusens!) because they only had boys. 5 boys. Who have now produced 9 granddaughters and one grandson. Which means that pretty much none of the great-grandchildren will be Lambournes by name.....but that's not really the issue for this post.

So I finished editing and couldn't figure out which ones to put on the blog. So I "narrowed" it down to 30. Um...that's a lot. So, rather than putting them ALL on here and making a run for longest post of the century, I decided to make a slide show of all the edited pictures from our big family shoot. (minus the ones for Chad & Jenn...I'm still working on those!)

I did this Session on Friday evening. Sorry for the bit of slacking on getting your sneak peek posted :) I was pretty sick all weekend and didn't do much other than sleep.

Krystal is getting married in a couple of weeks so we headed out to get her Bridal photography done. I love shooting bridals. It's fun to see the Bride so relaxed; beautiful and happy without the stress of the actual wedding day on her shoulders.

Only one picture of the full dress on this peek....and it's not TOO up close and detailed. Just in case George sneaks a peek too :) Check back after the wedding to see the entire dress up close. Krystal's Mom made the dress! And it deserves some oogling :)

I've had the joy of photographing these two little cuties before and I loved it. Today was no different. Well, it was a bit different. We were shooting outside, which meant than in stead of trying to keep busy big sister on the backdrop I was able to let her run around and play while capturing her whenever I could. She certainly seemed to enjoy this way a lot more :)

More Boys!

Before you look at this and think "Okay, Alysha's crazy. That is a pregnant woman and thus clearly a girl..." let me explain. The boy is in the belly :)

This cute Mom is 31 weeks pregnant with her second child. Her first was a girl, and now they're having a boy. That's how I had it all planned out in my head when I decided I wanted to have children. I would have a boy, then a girl, then a boy and back and forth until I decided I was done. Reality in stead gave me a girl, then a girl, then a girl, and a girl....and another girl! I can't imagine my life without any of my girls, but there is still a part of me which hopes for a boy one day.

Isn't this mom super cute!? I know I don't look like that at 31 weeks....which is probably why I have no photographs of me when I'm that pregnant.

It doesn't feel like a job. Not even close. Isn't that what "they" say: if you do something you love then it's not work? I get to spend time with cute kids, happy families, and loving couples. How on earth could that be work? I love it!

This little boy made my day! He was SO cute with easy smiles and such a chunker! And being able to photograph yet another little boy. I loved it. If I never get to have a boy of my own at least I'll get to enjoy spending a little bit of time with other people's sons :)

Brothers & Sisters

These three cuties came to my studio today for some updated photos. The youngest little sister wasn't in the mood for pictures, but that's okay! We still snuck in some adorable photos without her even realizing it. Big sister and big brother were happy to ham it up for the camera. It was a fun shoot :)

I've never done this before. Family portraits for a fellow photographer. I was a bit nervous about it but I think it went well :) Cute kids and a happy Mom always make for a good family session. (Sorry, Dads, but it's true. Mom's mood really does set the tone for a session).

We hit downtown Salt Lake for this one. It was early enough that the lighting was great and there were no other people around (well, except for one oddly friendly man...but there are always bound to be some eccentric people in the streets of any downtown!).

Six months old!

I was able to photograph this little cutie when she was 4 months old. I loved one of the pictures so much that I have it on display in my studio. When her parents called to ask if I would do her 6 month portraits, and a family session too I was so excited! She is such a cutie and you couldn't ask for nicer, happier parents to work with too. I was expecting today's session to go great, and it did :) And, once again, I adore one of her pictures! But I'm running out of space on my studio walls...haha. It will for sure be up on my website though!

This cute family won a family session from me back in December, through a giveaway on MormonMommyBlogs. We talked right after and Mom wanted to wait until the weather was warmer for the sitting. So we waited. And finally the weather is great so we did the session yesterday morning. It was so much fun :) We shot at a new location for me and I really liked it. There were a few shots I tried which didn't turn out quite as I planned but most of them are fantastic! The texture of old buildings and stone mixed with the beauty of the stream and trees. I loved it and hope to take other families there.

Small, intimate, and big...yes, they can all go together

This is Lara & Steve. I met them today, on their wedding day. They live in St. George, about 4 hours away, but got married in Utah County and Lara booked me via e-mail. That always makes me smile - somebody who wants me even though they haven't met me :) Their ceremony was small and private so they asked for me to come only for the reception. It was lovely, set in her brother's backyard. But don't let the venue fool you into thinking these too would fit into that small, timid mold. Not at all. It was fun to watch them throughout the evening and to photograph them as well. They were game for pretty much anything...including jumping on the neighbors trampoline :) That was a first and I'm so glad they took me up on the suggestion because it was a lot of fun...for me, at least. And judging from their expressions it was fun for them too. Lara even kept laughing when she fell and Steve almost jumped on her.

So, yes a small, intimate wedding and big personalities can all go together.

A step into another world

I've attended Polynesian Luau's before. When I was in college I dated a guy from Samoa. His extended family had luaus as parties at least once a month. I loved them. But I had never attended nor photographed a Tongan wedding before. It was so fun! A bit hard to understand at times. Many of the guests spoke no English so much of what the MC said was spoken in Tongan. That's great....except the neither the photography, videographer, nor the white Bride spoke a lick of Tongan! So...at times it was like being in another world. I tried to follow what was happening but for many things I was grabbing my camera and running over to catch the next event, because I had no idea what the MC said was coming next. It was fun, though. It kept me on my toes for sure.

Besides the language barrier I enjoyed every single moment. Well, that's not true. Even with the language barrier I enjoyed every single moment. There was dancing. Tons of dancing. And there was not a dull moment the entired reception. Forget about trying to find exciting moments while the Bride & Groom stand in a line for a few hours. This one was packed with dancing by the Groom's Family and friends. And I'm not just talking about dancing to a DJ.

Even the Bride & Groom got in on it. Katie learned a dance to perform for Pasi and Pasi and his Groomsmen did a special dance for Katie. It was great! I know they will love watching it on the video!

Lots of traditional dancing. Oh, and they danced for money. I know that sounds odd...but I can't think of how else to say it. It's a tradition at Tongan weddings, apparently. If you enjoy the dance you can give them money and all the money goes to the Bride & Groom. It's a way to start their lives together.

I think we should incorporate this tradition into all weddings. That way, in stead of 4 toasters you can have money for the Honeymoon and to start your lives with!

Now back to the main point of the day: The couple. Katie & Pasi were SO cute together. I hadn't met Pasi before the wedding but I knew Katie was not only adorale but incredibly nice so I figured Pasi would match that. I was right. It was a joy to work with them.

I have a lot (A LOT) of pictures to sift through but here are a few which jumped out at me while I was loading them all into Lightroom.

Such a CUTE baby boy! And he was SO good too. He cried once - when his older sister accidently stepped on his hand. I loved this session and probably could have taken pictures of him all day. Unfortunately my clients usually have other places to be. So in stead I just get to have fun looking at the images and getting them ready for the online gallery.

Luck and Rain

"They" say that rain on your wedding day means good luck in your marriage. In that case Andrea & Tim are in for a fabulous marriage. They definitely had rain on their wedding day! But, and this is where the luck started, it stopped for their ceremony and pictures. About an hour before the ceremony began the rain stopped. And about an hour after it ended the rain came down hard. But during the ceremony, and for the pictures afterward the day was great. Not hot at all - in fact, it was a bit on the chilly side - and cloudy so the lighting was perfect.

The Mother-to-be. Again

Most maternity shoots I have done have been for a couple's first baby. I'm not sure why that is. I know it's not because people care less with their second, third, fourth, etc... pregnancies. Perhaps, like me, they don't like their bellies anymore after having one baby. I have so many stretch marks I call it my road map. Or, more likely, they just feel they can't find the time for pictures and the time gets away from them. Before they know it the baby is here and the opportunity for Maternity photos has passed.

But not Erin. This is her fourth (seriously - her fourth! And she looks so petite and cute still) and she made time to come in for maternity pictures.

I hope she can look back at these and remember the pregnancy with fondness...after all the pain goes away and the baby is here...then you can smile about it and enjoy the pregnancy for what it brought to you.

Such a gorgeous itty bitty

I love tiny babies. Maybe because I give birth to enormous children, or maybe because whenever I hold a tiny baby it just makes me feel close to heaven. I don't know why; I just know I love photographing newborns. This little girl isn't quite a newborn since she came at the end of April, but it's close enough. She was so petite and sweet. Yes, she cried some but that comes with being a baby. And she was so sleepy but didn't want to sleep for us...until Mommy put her back in the carseat.

Prima Ballerina...in the making

Two is a fun age. They don't want to sit still and smile. Two year olds like to play. But they're kids....that's their job! And it's fun to watch them get it done.

This little cutie loves to play dress up, so she came decked out in a ballerina leotard, a tutu and leggings. I loved it! And she did her job well, running back and forth and playing with Mommy. She was crawling all over...and under...everything. I was the observer, capturing her beautiful eyes and smile whenever I could.

The pictures at Fablehaven {Utah County Family Photography}

Maybe it's not really Fablehaven but the girls were pretending it was, and that made me smile. My own oldest daughter loves that series (truth be told, so do I) and it was fun to hear a love of the books coming from others. And the ampitheatre is a bit magical. The stone pathways and benches, the beautiful old trees and picturesque flower beds are the stuff stories are made of. I hadn't seen it that way before, so thanks to you girls for bringing a new spin on an old location.

This family was a lot of fun for me to photograph. Their children were close in age to my own kids so it was a little glimpse into what a shoot for our family is like...from the other side of the camera. I can only hope that we are half as nice as this family was.

One of the perks of being a photogrpher is having the equipment to do pictures of my own kids. One of the drawbacks is not having the time to do it. I have heard the saying "The plumbers pipes are always leaking." I think I get it now. I keep my camera with me all the time so I have a lot of candid, fun shots of my children and family but when it comes to portraits to hang on the wall and send to the grandparents I'm usually behind. I get them done...but almost always a bit "late."

This is my youngest beauty. She turned one last week and I did her portraits today. I don't work on Sundays but this wasn't work...this is my baby. So before we went to church my hubby and I loaded up the kids and drove to a nearby park to take her portraits. It was fun. She was WAY more interested in playing with the grass and eating her cupcake to smile for me but we still got some very cute pictures.

I know she's cute but I wanted to share it with you too...so thanks for indulging me :)

Oh - and that picture of her standing...holding somebody's hands. Well, that's me. Proof that I do exist :) My dear husband took that picture.

This little guy was a lot of fun....he just hated the camera. But, like other photographers and all moms know, even grumpy is cute. And I know he smiles. He just didn't want to do it for the camera. Our third child is the same way. Even now, and she's 7. She just gets shy and a bit awkward when the camera comes her way. You have to work with her to get a smile and out of every session I only get a handful of pictures with a true smile. Some kids just like to interact with a person rather than a big hunk of metal and I totally understand that.

It really was fun though. We headed to "my" orchard again. I love it there. And we hit the morning again because I liked it so much last time. We weren't the only ones there today but it was still better than evenings.

The beginning of Happily Ever After

As a child I always wondered what happened after the end of the story. After it says "And they lived Happily Ever After." It always seemed to me like there should be more. Happily Ever After...and then what? I wanted more. I wasn't content with that ending. I saw it as a beginning of another story. And I still do.

One thing I love about wedding portraiture is being able to be a part of a couple's beginning. The end of the story of their courtship but the start of their Happily Ever After. It's exciting.

I'm not naive. I'm married. I have kids. I know it's not always happy and there are always obstacles. But as long as their is a smile and laughter the happy comes, even in the midst of problems. And over all if there is more happy than sad then you have your happy ending.

Thanks for letting me be a part of your day Cheltsie & Joey! It was beautiful. From the venue to the couple it was all wonderful. Simple yet elegant with wonderful little touches which tied it all together. It was a great beginning to your Happily Ever After.

The birthday do-over

That's what I am declaring this day. My birthday was last Friday - the day I miscarried. So it pretty much stunk. But today is great! The sun is shining, the skies are blue, the temperature is finally just right for May. And it's a good day for a birthday.

It was practicaly a birthday party this morning anyway. I was able to take some pictures of a very cute little girl who just turned one. And we had cake. Cute kids and cake = birthdays. So I am taking this absolutely beautiful day as my birthday do-over :)

This little beauty was so much fun to work with. She didn't like the grass so she was a bit hesitant at times. But she had beautiful eyes and a face to melt my heart. I loved this session.

We headed to my favorite orchard. I've only been there in the evenings but I think I like morning more! We were the only ones there! I am used to juggling for a good spot in the evenings. But we got to pick a great spot with great lighting. Loved it! And I am SO glad we rescheduled! We were supposed to do pictures on Monday. Then, being Utah, it snowed. On May 24th. Seriously. So I talked to Mom and we decided to push it back to Friday. And we couldn't have picked a better day.

I had a really hard time picking just a few to put up in this peek. But I think I narrowed it down to some good ones :) Enjoy your sneak peek!

What a beautiful day for a Wedding!

It rained ALL night the night before, and most of the morning. Then it rained again in between the wedding and reception...but for their photographs and reception the day could not have been better. Not too hot, not cold and gorgeous fluffy white clouds in the sky. Christina & AJ got a really beautiful day for their wedding.

This wedding was a tough one for me. I don't normally delve into my personal life on this blog, but I had a miscarriage the day before their wedding. I spent most of the day before, and the morning before their ceremony, in tears. My emotions were all over the place. I even briefly contemplated calling in a photographer friend to take my place. But then I decided what I needed was to be surrounded by happy people...and what better place than a wedding to find a lot of truly happy people? I am so glad I did it. Christina was such a calm, gracious bride and it was a joy to work with her and AJ and their families on their big day.

I post my favorites on this blog. The pictures which are technically or photographically great...or the ones that just move me. And the last picture in the post does just that. I know it's a little blurry (camera shake happens to everybody!) and not compositionally amazing but I love it. That tender moment between a new husband and wife, one when they didn't even know anybody was watching. It's beautiful. And easily made my list of favorites from the day.

I just want to play!

This was a cute little family. Their little 19 month old just wanted to play. And who can blame her? I can't think of any little kid I know who WANTS to stop playing and smile for a camera. Wait...no...I can think of two who would sit and have their picture taken all day if I let them, but I would venture to guess that *most* kids would rather go play than sit still for a camera. It was a lot of fun trying to get her to smile and catch her beautiful grins.

We headed to the American Fork Ampitheatre. I have only been there in the evenings before so I was a little wary about the lighting at 10am but it was great. Now I know I can go morning or evening....I'll stop having to jockey for spots with other photographers when I have a client who wants to go there.

The best part of my day

Honestly, it was. I can't say that I had a great day - personally - but being able to photograph these two cute little Southern Belles made my day! I knew they were southern instantly, and not just because of Mom's accent. She told the girls that "Miss Alysha" would be taking their photos and I just knew. Miss...followed by the first name. That reminded me of home so much. Funny that I still call the South home. I haven't been back since I left for college in 1996. But I still love it and part of my heart will always be there.

These girls were a lot of fun. Big sister took a little while to warm up to me but once I figured out she was ticklish, it was a snap. Little sister loved to ham it up for the camera but she was a quick one. I had to be on my game to catch her smiling before she switched positions and ran to choose her next prop. I loved it!

The session was a tad interesting for me, but thankfully Mom was really easy going. My sitter canceled about 10 minutes before their appointment but I didn't want to turn around and cancel on them too. So I made the snap decision to put in a movie for my 3 year old and put the baby down for a nap. Baby napped well....you would never have known she was here. But the 3 year old decided she needed to come up into the studio and play with the other kids. I felt SO unprofessional but, like I said, Mom took it in stride - even reading a book to my little girl. So, sorry and thank-you!

Precious Sister

This beautiful little girl has an older brother. He wasn't with us but it was still cute to hear Mom calling her "sister" throughout the session. Love it :)

She was a bit cranky but that's okay! Waitiing for baby to be happy comes with the territory of photographing little ones. Besides, her cute smile was worth waiting for....and her great hair made any crankiness seem like nothing :) We got some really great images of this beauty. It wasn't hard; mom is photogenic and baby follows in her footsteps for sure!

Little Brothers

This little girl was SO cute with her little brother. Maybe one day my girls will get to be that way :) Seriously though, she jumped up and down to make him smile and was trying to make him laugh almost the whole session...and succeeded most of the time. You can definitely tell she loves him.

I cannot get enough of this cute little guy's suit! I hear my friends with boys complain about the lack of cute boy clothes. Really!? I see cute boy clothes everywhere I go...lol...and this suit is proof. I wanted to squeeze him it was so adorable.

Why can't we all look like this?

This is my gorgeuous friend Amanda and her seriously cute kids! Well, in the case of her daughter I think beautiful is a more acurate description, but still cute sums it up for the both of them.

I asked Amanda (ages ago) to come down and be my guinea pigs for my new backdrops. She agreed and then we waited....and waited....and waited for my backdrops to arrive. The last one FINALLY came in (three months after ordering) and we set up a time for her and her kids to come in for portraits. Of course I took them outside for some shots too!

We were planning on the American Fork Ampitheatre but when we got there it was pretty full with photographers already. I didn't want to sit around and wait so I asked if they wanted to head over to my trusty ol' train tracks spot in stead. The kids sounded excited about it and Amanda was up for anything (which is so completely like her) that we drove over to the tracks and had fun there. That spot was fairly busy too but there are more spots to photograph than at the Ampitheatre so it was easy to work around the other photogs but never have to sit and wait for a space.

I think the pictures turned out great! Hope ya'll like them :)

Never a dull moment!

Last night I was able to do Cheltsie's Bridal portraits. We went to Memory Grove, the International Peace Gardens and the Great Salt Lake...and adventure ensued all around us. Well, maybe not adventure so much as a bit of wierdness but it was fun nonetheless.

Memory Grove - we were yelled at by a drunk, homeless man. He was letting words fly that would make any momma blush....in front of Cheltsie's 12 year old sister. Nice. But we mostly ignored him and walked away while he was still yelling.

International Peace Gardens - we were yelled at again. Why is not important but it was enough that I had to say something back. I think some people are just too wrapped up in how important they think they are.

The Great Salt Lake - well, the ground was squishy. And it stunk...bad. But, mostly the ground was squishy. And my foot sunk so deep that my shoe came off. Then I had to step on the nasty ground barefoot. That was lovely.

But the pictures are amazing so it was all definitely worth it!

He was so happy :) It was fantastic. This is the little 6 week old of one of my neighbors. Isn't he precious? All their kids are so stinkin' cute and I was excited when Mom called to ask if I would take baby's photos.

Excited for a baby sister

As soon as these little ones came in, the oldest one says to me "We are SO happy to finally have a baby sister!" Mom is pretty happy about it too. After 4 boys they got a baby girl. Maybe her luck will rub off on me; I would love to finally have a boy after our five girls :)

I photographed this cute baby girl last week but she wasn't having a good day. When Mom asked if she could bring the baby back for another try I said absolutely! And I'm so glad she did. Baby was in a much better mood and while we couldn't quite get a smile she was contect for most of the session and I think we got some beautiful images to choose from.

And, since her brothers came alone we got some pictures of two of them as well. Baby was hungry and the boys were cute so why not? It was fun. I can't get enough of the 3 year old's hair. SO cute!

I can't think of a catchy title.....

I've been sitting here for the past few minutes trying to think of a catchy title for this blogpost...but I can't. So, there you go.

This is the Jeffs family. And no, his name isn't Jeff...even though I did call him that a few times (apparently I'm not the only one who has done that so I didn't feel TOO dumb about it). Fun kids, and exactly like kids are supposed to be.

Like I've said before family portraits are not my strongest area, but I do love them. And I always love the chance to take them and improve. I think these turned out great. I did make a few rookie mistakes which I could kick myself for. But it all worked out. This is why I *heart* Lightroom :)

What is it with the basketball?

I think it's cute. Every little kid seems to love this basketball! I think it's been in more pictures than any other prop I have....and it wasn't even *supposed* to be a prop. It belongs to my 2 year old's basketball set. Now, it lives in my studio just for adorable little hands to hold during pictures.

This little girl was SO cute. I love it. She was happy playing with Mommy & Daddy but didn't really care about the crazy lady with the big black hunk of metal. But she was still smiley for us and gave us some absolutely beautiful more serious faces too. We decided to stay with the white backdrop, which I'm glad for. I love my fun backdrops and the colorful ones too but sometimes it's nice to just have the white so we can focus more on the child than the backdrop. And this beauty doesn't need anything extra to make the image amazing!

Just being 2!

Another niece :) See, I told you they are the cutest kids in the world! This is Tennley...and she wasn't in the mood for pictures today. To use a phrase I use all the time when talking about my own 2 year old...she was just being 2 today. And y'know what, Tennley? That's totally fine! You are two! (well, almost...she'll be two early next week) And when you're two you get to act like you are :)

I still love the images we got though, and it was fun for me, getting to play with my cute niece. She LOVED the camera too. She would sit still for a minute then run at me so she could push the shutter button on my camera and watch the flash go. Loved it! Maybe I'll have an intern in a few years ;)

The fun of 4 months

Sometimes I wish we could all be as free as babies....and just scream to let everybody know when we were DONE with something :)

This session was fun, even with my slightly posessesd yellow backdrop (really, it was odd but it would NOT stay put). The little girl is absolutely adorable. She was all smiles...until we got her on the backdrops. She did really well though, and just let us know when she was done with each pose. And, I must say, that one of her in the sunglasses is one of my favorite baby pictures. Ever.

Cousins

These 4 little cuties are cousins. As much as it can be a handful I love working with groups of kids because it shows me - yet again - that every child is different and I have to try different techniques to get them smiling for me :) Not everybody loves a game of peek-a-boo.

The little guy was SO handsome in his suit but he had a hard time warming up to me. I still love the images we got. And poor baby girl just wanted Mommy; but with patience and lots of Mommy love we got some beautiful pictures of her too. It was my second time photographing the other two beauties. They were happy as long as they got to play; so it was a fun challenge to catch them before they ran away too quickly!

This is cute Shaylee. I loved this session. Her mom came along and it was fun to see them interact. I hope that when my girls are Seniors they still want me to come along.

Shaylee was easy to talk to, very photogenic - really, there isn't a bad photo in the whole bunch - and was game to do anything, even if it was dangrously close to falling into a river (OK, so it was a creek...and only about 4 inches deep...but still, she could have fallen in).

I love pregnant women! Except, as I've said before, myself. When I'm pregnant you better not get anywhere near me with that camera. I hate it. Oddly enough so do most of my clients...lol. But I manage to convince them that the memories are worth it. Maybe I'll take my own advice and if we have another child I'll get some maternity shots. Hear that Ashley? I'll let you inflict the same torture on me when (if) I am ever pregnant again.

Green Shoes

I knew I would love working with this bride the second I saw her green shoes. Green is my favorite color so of course anybody who wears it is cool. And wearing it as a wedding shoe? That makes you even cooler.

Marci was also really laid back. We were rained out from the original location but she was still all smiles about going someplace new...and was game to be dragged out in the rain for some outside shots. No worries - we had a fun black & white umbrella to keep her dry (although I did ask her to ditch the umbrella at one point and she did...cause she's cool like that. It was the green shoes I'm sure.)

What Seven looks like

Seven years old. It's fun. They get to go to school all day long. They are old enough to play outside with their friends...without mom watching them like a hawk. They can ride bikes, and scooters, and play sports. But they're not too old to want to cuddle. They are finally figuring out the real difference between right and wrong but they still have so much innocence. I like Seven.

This is my darling Kira. She's seven now. It doesn't seem possible that she is that old. But she is. Seven years ago she came into my life. Intense from day one. She is an amazing little girl and I am so lucky to be her mom.

You know guys hate it.... { American Fork High Senior Portraits }

Sitting for pictures, that is. It always makes me laugh. Not because I think it's prototypical men but because I know how they feel. I can stand behind the camera all day but put me on the other side and I am done after a couple of minutes. I always wonder...Why does anybody want pictures of me anyway? I'm pretty sure that's what most of the guys are thinking. But for Senior portraits guys, sorry but you just have to suck it up. Your mom wants the pictures. I understand that one too. Because I'm a mom. And I love having pictures of my children surrounding me.

So, boys, just smile pretty and it will all be over soon. Then you make your moms happy. It's all worth it. So just deal with it :)

Brad is my husband's cousin. I don't know him all that well but it was fun doing his Senior portraits today and chatting with him a bit. He's got 5 older sisters, plays LaCrosse, loves to Snowboard and like the Beatles. Fun kid.

June Bug { Highland Children's Photography }

I love June Bugs. I have two of them. Elli came in June of 2007 and Reagan in June of 2009. They're just cute. Honestly. I don't know of any babies born in June who aren't absolutely adorable and little Eliza is no exception.

She is two weeks younger than my Reagan and I had a blast doing her 9 month portraits. Watching her interact with sister and smile for mommy...it was great. She wasn't a huge fan of the tutu but I can't say that I'd be thrilled with being wrapped up in layers of scratchy tulle either. At least it made for some adorable pictures.

Sisters { Pleasant Grove Children's Photography }

These two cuties are just under a year apart. SO cute! And big sister was so cute with baby. She wouldn't give her love when the camera was on her but it was still fun to watch :)

Big sister wanted to run around and play, little sister wanted to cuddle Mama but we still caught some great images. Originally the plan was to do a few on the black and switch to the white backdrop but I loved the way the colors looked against the black so we stayed with that. These dresses from Lil Zoe just pop with contrast; LOVE them. Besides, I think these two little ones were done. And that's perfectly fine....don't you wish as adults it were still so easy to let others know when we were over something?

Really, I do. You can't deny truth. All 5 of them are just beautiful. This is London. I got to photograph her when she was only a month old - you can see that session here - back when I was first starting out in portrait photography. But then her mean ol' parents decided to move out of state and I missed two whole years! But they're back now so I was able to do her two year pictures :) I can't believe you're two London. You're so beautiful too - not hard with a Momma like yours!

The Childs Family, 2010 { Provo Utah Photography }

My nemesis: the family portrait. Group shots have always been my struggle but I wouldn't do it if I didn't like it, so I keep on plugging on :) And this family was a great one to work with.

Remember baby Olivia, from last week? This is her family. Not only did I get a chance to see her again (and I swear she changed in the 5 days since I last saw her!) but I also got to photograph Mom, Dad, two sisters and her brother. Good times.

And how hard is it to get 4 small children looking and smiling at the same time? You tell me...lol. I don't think it's HARD but it sure is a challenge photographers (and parents!) everywhere can relate to :)

A mover and a shaker { Utah County newborn photography }

I got to photograph another new little squishy today. She was so fun. Only 3 weeks old and she literally never stopped moving the entire time. She was definitely letting her wants be known. I loved it :) She is absolutely beautiful too. I love getting to photograph new babies. The only "problem" is that it gives me the baby itch! The smell, look and touch of cute new babies is so amazing. My youngest is only 9 months old though so for now I will get my fill of newborns through the lens :)

The first white dress (Lehi Children's photography)

Back in December I wrote about the second white dress - Baptism. Today I had the opportunity to photograph a little baby girl in her first white dress. The Blessing gown. Little Olivia looks so precious in the gown; like a little angel. So close to heaven and yet, in the arms of her family. It's only fitting that an angel gets to wear such a beautiful gown.

There has been just one before,
A dress now put away.
That I wore sometime ago upon my blessing day.
As a little baby clothed in my first white dress,
My dad held me in his arms, there to name and bless.
So pure and clean was I just then,
With time to grow and learn

Busy Basketball (Utah Children's Photographer)

I had so much fun with this little guy. He wanted to run around and play basketball the whole time. But, really, what else should you expect from an 18 month old little boy? He was a bit on the serious side but when he smiled it lit up the room. He reminded me a lot of my 7 year old daughter - she is a tough sell but once you get her smiling it was worth all the trouble.

I love it when a session leaves me smiling the rest of the day and this one certainly did.

I put an ad in the Value Pages. Brendan's mom was the first person to call and book from that ad. YAY! Easy smiles and a good sport - he let me drag him out on the railroad tracks in the FREEZING cold and snow. And I love that he brought his guitar. It made for a fun prop and it was easy to get him to play a bit and be completely natural. Loved it :)

I love the look of upholstered furniture out in nature. Let me say that again. LOVE it. But I didn't have any pieces I could take outside with me. So when I saw this chair at Ikea I had to have it. I actually decided not to get it but then drove back the very next day to get it (with two kids in tow) because I couldn't stop thinking about the chair. So of course I had to use it! I asked this cute girl to be my model so I could play with the chair and a location I have seen a in other pictures, a couple of times. Thanks to Christie for telling me where it is!

Sugar and spice and everything nice (Utah County children's photography)

Or maybe it is sugar and sass....that would fit this one a bit more (I can say that, she's mine too). As much as I love shooting outdoors I realized that if I want to take more images if little children then having an indoor location would be great too. So I took the plunge and bought some lighting. I already had a couple of backdrops and the stands but I have ordered a few more which are still coming (they are very cool and apparently everybody loves them because they are on backorder...). I finished setting up my lights a few days ago and I needed a model so my 8 year old volunteered. Actually, she more like JUMPED at the chance...haha. She has aspirations of acting and/or modeling so she will take any chance she can get to be in front of the camera. Good thing her Momma is a photographer. As you can tell, we had fun :)

The last picture I snapped of her while we were out on a shoot. She asked if she could come with me to be my assistant.

This is my baby girl. I cannot believe she is 9 months old already! She kept trying to crawl off the backdrop and wanted to play with my camera but we made it through. And I know I am biased but this is one seriously cute kid :)

Sisters

Well, just one sister, I guess. The other one was behind the camera. My big sisters is visiting from Texas so today I dragged her out in the cold and snow so I could take a few pictures in a new location. We didn't make it to that location but I used a different one which I pass every day but had never tried. It was fun :) Freezing but fun.

Brittany & Jeff: The Wedding

Last Saturday my husband and I drove up to Idaho Falls and back. On the same day. We're crazy, that's why. But it was worth it. It was my first opportunity to photograph a wedding at the Idaho Falls Temple AND another chance to photograph Brittany & Jeff. I love working with them! They truly embody the reason I love wedding photography: Happy People!

It was a BEAUTIFUL day. I just hope I did it justice.

Oh, to be young again

This beautiful young lady is my neighbor. I needed a photograph of a High School Senior for an ad I am placing in a local mailer so I asked her if she would be my subject and she agreed. LOVE it! She was so easy to work with and so photogenic. This is why I love what I get to do :)

Today I got the chance to photograph three cute kids from a family who lost their money and photographs when Kiddie Kandids shut down so unexpectedly. It was so much fun - the kids were cute and smiled easily. And thinking about their little boy made me smile the rest of the day.

On Monday I got to do a Bridal session with Brittany. SO much fun! Moving furniture around in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, riding Trax, dragging her down a city alley in high heels and no coat. She was a trooper and we got some great shots. LOVED the parasol she brought along. Enjoy, Brittany! I can't wait for the wedding :)

Oh, and bonus. I learned that if you shoot at the Salt Lake Temple on a Monday you can actually get good photographs without any random strangers in the background!

How's that for a $40 wedding dress. Yes, that is the right number of zeros. AND she had it custom made in China. Cost more to have it shipped to the States than to have the dress made.

For my wedding I wanted a big, colorful bouquet made of gerbera daisies and lillies. With fruit in the bouquet (limes, to be exact). And that's what I got. And I LOVED it. But there is something to be said for a bouquet of white roses. Simple. Classy. Beautiful. Just like Yan & Chris' entire wedding.

Not red or pink or blue.

A dress now put away.
That I wore sometime ago upon my blessing day.
As a little baby clothed in my first white dress,

Now I've reached the age to judge the wrong road from the right,
And I am here to be baptized in this dress of white.
So once again I'm free from sin,
The path is clear to me.
I'll grasp the road and hold on tight,
I vow with certainty.
Just as mud would stain my dress,
Sin would stain my soul.
The key is to repent or bleach,
For whiteness is my goal.

And if I try my very best,

I really enjoyed being able to photograph BrookLyn in her second white dress. She is the oldest daughter of one of my oldest friends. We met during the first week of our Freshman year at BYU (no need to tell you exactly how long ago that was). We were roommates for two semesters then we went different directions. I stayed at BYU and Ashlee chased dreams. But even when we were nowhere near each other physically we have always been close. She was there for me in an instant when I called in tears needing her at the lowest moment of my life. It was a privilege to help them create memories of B's special dress.

Brittany & Jeff: The Engagements

Who doesn't love an engagement photo? Two people in love. It's great. It reminds me of back when I used to look at my husband with those adoring eyes, cuddled up next to him without a care in the world. Now I usually look at him with exhaustion, over the heads of kids, wondering when we will have time to cuddle again.

The Engagement. A time to look forward to the future while being so happy in your current moment. Maybe we should all get back to that point. It doesn't matter where we are in life; we should all look forward to the future that we have and embrace the present we are living.

Brittany & Jeff were a really fun couple to shoot. Jeff was so enthusiastic about the photographs - I wish more guys were like him! And Brittany was willing to try anything...even when it meant almost falling off a ledge, chasing some scary geese, or sitting on train tracks with the threat of a train on the way. Oh, the fun of being young :) I think I remember it.

So I heard about this tonight and immediately wanted to participate. How cool is this!?

Why do it? Because I love capturing memories. LOVE it. I would do it all for free but unfortunately doing everything Pro Bono doesn't pay the bills :( But when I can contribute and do some good with my photography I cannot wait to do it.

Adorable Tennley

One perk of being my relative is I LOVE taking pictures and sometimes I'll just call up somebody and ask if I can take some photos, for no other reason than I have an itch to take a picture. And I can only take so many of my own little people before they get annoyed with the camera.

So this week I got to take some pictures of my adorable 18 month old niece. I had grand schemes of her playing with an oversized Christmas ornament but she wanted nothing to do with it and in stead attached herself to these big flowers and my 6 year old's stuffed dog in an elf suit. It works.

The only problem with photographing friends is that I could do it all day. Especially when they're photogenic and fun to photograph. I don't want to stop clicking. And the only problem with that is the subjects aren't always as enthusiastic about photography as I am.

I took Karisa and Dave to Wheeler Farms and Murray Park. Wheeler Farms was great. I don't know why but I love seeing Brides with rustic and old stuff and Wheeler Farms was well stocked in rustic and old.

It was really hard for me to pick favorites but I think these are a good start :)

So I have an idea.....

A glimmer of an idea. Probably a little crazy. But it's been jumping around in my head for a couple of years and I think it's time to let the idea live and see what happens.

I don't want to let out too many details because I am a bit superstitious when it comes to ruining something by letting the cat out of the bag TOO early. But it's a book. A book about getting past the things which threaten to knock us down.

But my crazy idea needs help from others. It's not just me. Life happens to all of us and we can all learn from each other.

Five years ago my life turned completely upside down. I never thought I'd be happy again. And at times I still break down in tears over my loss but now I can lean on the support of a loving family. In life we have to get back up and move forward. We can't always say it was a blessing but we can say we wouldn't have the blessings we have now if it weren't for what happened then.

So here's what I need from you. A story about life and how it tried to knock you down. Or maybe it did but you got back up. Do you have a story? Or do you know somebody who has a story? The beauty of pregnancy

I love maternity photographs. Not of me...I've had 4 kids and have maybe 5 pictures of me while pregnant. But other pregnant women I could photograph every day. Anyone who has been pregnant can tell you the not so beautiful side of preganancy: heartburn, sleepless nights, peeing 20 times a day, aches and pains, labor.... but we don't stop often enough to remember the miracle growing inside us. That's why I love maternity shoots. I hope to help the mother remember the beauty and it helps remind me of how wonderful it all can be.

Erina is one of the cutest pregnant moms I've ever seen. And she's beautiful to boot. (Can you believe she actually told me she's not photogenic!?). She brought along adorable little Kennedy for the shoot. It was great :) We went to the Provo Castle and a nearby orchard. A new location for me; I'll have to add it to my list.

3 month old beauty

I'm biased. I know that. She's my baby so of course I think she's beautiful. But you have to admit that this is one cute baby!

We had her blessing close to two months ago but I finally got around to photographing her in her dress. And since I told my mom I'd brag for her....let it be known that Nana made the gown :)

Karisa & Dave

I had so much fun doing this engagement shoot. Not only is Karisa absolutely gorgeous she is also an old friend of mine. I was so happy when she agreed to let me do her engagement and bridal shoots. I could have photographed them all day but my babysitter needed me home...and Dave had a tee-time he didn't want to miss ;) Plus, like most grooms Dave was kinda done with the photography after a couple of hours.

We went to Murray park then to some fun train tracks my friend Lindi (of Lindi Marie photography) told me about. Loved them! Thank-you so much Lindi! They were great visually, and the old building next to the tracks was fantastic - it gave us a few fun urban shots.

I can't wait to do her bridal session in a few weeks!

Andrea & Kyle's wedding was just as I thought it would be - a lot of fun! I don't think the two of them could do anything less. It was also beautiful. Thanks for letting me be a part of your day!

Sorry it took a while on the sneak peek. I've had a hard time picking favorites to put on the blog. I chose about 30 that I really liked and narrowed it down to 9 to post on here. I think these show different parts of the day in a beautiful way. Enjoy :)
